CANINE HIP DYSPLASIA SCREENING

The principal objective of selective breeding is to maximize the pairing of good genes by breeding dogs not affected with canine hip dysplasia. There are two common tests available for hip dysplasia screening, and we are able to administer both types. Both the OFA test and PennHIP require the dog to be anesthetized.

  • Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA)—Currently this test is regarded as the “gold standard” used to determine a dog’s susceptibility to hip dysplasia. This test rates a dog’s hip joint on a seven-point scoring system. A radiograph is taken of the dog’s hip joint and the results are assigned a score by three independent radiologists: Excellent, Good, Fair, Borderline, Mild, Moderate, and Severe. Scores of Excellent, Good, and Fair are issued an OFA number recognized by the American Kennel Association.
  • University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program (PennHIP)—Three radiographs are taken to measure the looseness of the hip joint. Generally, looser hips are associated with the development of hip dysplasia. The test is not pass-fail, and the score is actually based on a measurement of the hip’s distraction index (DI). They are compared to all the other dogs in their breed in the database. This test is also recognized by the American Kennel Association.
